 Charles Joseph Minard

b 1781 in Dijon (F)—died 1870 in Bordeaux. An engineer who studied science and mathematics at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1796. He worked for many years throughout Europe as a civil engineer, 1830–1836 superintendent of the School of Bridges and Roads at the ENPC rebuilding the country's infrastructure after the Napoleonic Wars. Minard is most widely known for his «Carte figurative des pertes successives en hommes de l'Armée Français dans la campagne de Russe 1812-1813» which pioneered thematic cartography and developed novel graphic forms to depict data.
