Jean-François Lyotard
* 1924 in Versailles; studied literature and received a Ph.D. in philosophy in 1971; worked for trade-unions in Algeria from 1950–1952; militated within the group «Pouvoir ouvrier,» and co-editor of the journal «Socialisme ou Barbarie» from 1956–1964; lecturer at the Sorbonne and University of Nanterre (Paris X), professor within the Department of Philosophy at the Institut polytechnique de philosophie of the University of Vincennes (Paris X); since the 1970s numerous publications on the topics of media, technologies, and philosophy; curated the exhibition «Les Immateriaux» at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in 1985; died in Paris in 1998.
