 Shirin Neshat
«Allegiance with Wakefulness»

«When Shirin Neshat returned to Iran in 1990, after a 16-year absence, she was so shocked by the cultural changes that she decided to take up her own artistic production again, which she had given up after her studies. Photographic series, rich in contrasts and inspired by the compulsion to wear the veil in post-revolutionary Iran since 1983, depict Neshat herself and other women in chador (‹Women of Allah,› 1993–1997). Their faces, hands and feet are covered in Persian calligraphy, with rebellious poetry by Iranian female poets.»
