«A Description of the Equator and Some Øtherlands»

‘ØtherLands’ is a text-based, film-oriented Internet project that was scripted and edited by visitors to the ‘documenta’ show (both the physical and virtual versions). Almost daily, the main authors or their agents, together with ‘users’, almost daily uploaded texts and moving images in order to weave a network of interconnected films in a global authors’ collective.
‘The Equator’ is the sequel to Huber and Pocock’s two previous Net-art projects ‘arctic circle’ and ‘tropic of cancer’. Both projects had to do with authentic journeys: undertaken in the former by hikers through Northern Canada, and by culturally interested European tourists in Mexico in the latter. ‘The Equator’ must be seen equally as a loop presentation of travel-as-art and travel-as-information but also, and here especially, as a tapestry composed of virtual residencies on the Seventh Continent, namely Cyberspace.’ (Excerpt from the artists’ project description.)

After the ‘documenta’, the project went on display as a multimedia installation at various locations including, in 1998, the Cologne Art Fair.
