 Jean Theodore Fantin-Latour
«Lohengrin Präludium»

Fantin-Latour experiences the 1876 premiere performance of Wagner’s «Ring» in the Festspielhaus Bayreuth. This triggers a decisive change in his painting, directly reflected in these first oil studies which try to capture a synaesthetic experience. The succeeding developments of the theme, however, are again academic works. Fantin-Latour is also deeply impressed by the opening of «Rhinegold,» where the figures slowly emerge from the darkness, which he also tries to capture as an image.
