«Love Stinks – Images of Everyday Madness»

This experimental documentary about the artists' marital sexual behaviour provides a merciless record of private matters. During a sojourn in New York, Wilhelm and Birgit Hein filmed each other, focusing on their bodies and the nature of their sexuality. The result is an unvarnished record of their relationship and intimate life, including sexual intercourse, masturbation and bodycare activities. This takes place in an apartment in a hectic city that, hostile to meaningful relationships, contributes to the production of ‘everyday madness'. Birgit and Wilhelm Hein's work represents a continuation of the radical concepts realized in experimental films of the 1960s and 1970s.
