«I Once Saw a Film with Paul Newman in it»

I develop forms of representation which enable the viewer to perceive images which have been freed from their referents. Most of the time I try not to manipulate the images in any way, I merely work on organising the way they are presented. Viewed carefully and without prejudice, images emerge which develop their own logic and power of expression – and which seem to convey something completely different to what is being shown. ‘I Once Saw a Film with Paul Newman in it' deals with the reconstruction of camera movement. Digitized single frames taken from pan shots are linked by an animation program and reduces in size in such a way that frames appear to be gradually displaced according to the camera movement. The details not covered by the next image remain visible, while the follow-on sequence superimposes itself over the rest of the frame. The film you are watching freezes at the points where the previous shots can still be seen, producing a hybrid consisting of static and moving image.
