«Silver Mill»

Collaboratively produced by the three artists, this work was shown as part of Group ZERO’s ‘Lichtraum’ (‘Light Room’) at the 'documenta III', Kassel. Uecker studded the base (formerly a table in a pub) with nails, Mack contributed the blades on the wheel, while Piene was responsible for the perforation and filament lamps. Together with the ‘Weisse Lichtmühle’ (‘White Light Mill’), for which Piene’s easel was shot through with nails likewise and equipped with a dynamo, it is a repudiation of the conventional, static image.
