 Vilém Flusser

b 1920 in Prague (TCH). Writer, communication philosopher and media critic. Flusser is considered worldwide one of the most influential media-philosophers of the 20th century. In 1949 he and his future wife, Edith, emigrated to Brazil via London. In 1963 he published his first book in Portuguese «Lingua e Realidade» (Language and Reality). From 1964 to 1970, he was a professor of communication theory, serving on the Communication and Humanities faculty of the foundation A.A.Penteado (FAAP) in São Paulo. He was elected to the advisory committee of the Biennial of São Paulo in 1970. In 1972 he returned to Europe and lived in the province of Robion in Southern France. His interest in new media, and its influence on society and art increased, inspiring a massive literary output that led to publications in numerous languages. His first German-language book, «For a Philosophy of Photography,» was published in 1983. Flusser died 1991 in a car accident. His estate in the Flusser Archive of the Art Academy for Media in Cologne contains circa 2,500 manuscripts.
