Stih, Renata; Schnock, Frieder
«Neues Deutschland BILD»
The story of the two German states, the Federal Republic and the GDR was always a propaganda story as well. The ideological trench warfare between Capitalism and 'real Socialism,' could be followed particularly vividly in the newspapers of divided Berlin. Frieder Schnock and Renata Stih have surveyed 40 years of German/German history up to the fall of the Wall for the 'Deutschlandbilder' exhibition. They compiled and put together, a day at a time, hundreds of headlines from 'Neues Deutschland', the mouthpiece of the GDR government, and from the tabloid 'BILD', the self-appointed mouthpiece of the West German 'people'. The simple animation of the headlines on significant dates and also long-forgotten events is a vivid manifestation of the tense relationship between the two German states through the linguistic slogans and clichés.
