«Sonomorphis»

Bernd Lintermann (graphic representation) and Torsten Belschner (sounds) have created «SonoMorphis.» An organic object is projected onto the wall is that visitors can rotate in all directions and view from different perspectives using a control panel. Diverse parameters of the object can be altered by the sliding bars of regulators, but with their graphic representation (Bernd Lintermann) and sounds (Torsten Belschner) remaining inseparable and connected one to the other. In this way the space is constantly filled with ever newer audiovisual bodies. «SonoMorphis» is the attempt to creatively transpose the results of Lintermann’s and Belschner’s investigations of open systems in the area of computer technology. In this work, interaction follows the evolutionary principle of mutating graphic objects, and a selection based on six offered variations. On the visual level, the viewer manipulates and combines at will extracted formal qualities of nature, producing something relatively familiar to the eye and yet something never seen before. In each case, the current conditions of the visual simulation dictate the sounds of «SonoMorphis». From the standpoint of the acoustic level, the parameters of the graphics are interpreted in such a way to generate musical structures. In this manner, automatic compositions are also composed, whose results can only be predicted with regard to their components, but not regarding the details of their specific features and behavior. Created through the overlapping visual and sound levels is an open structure that can be repeatedly reconfigured by every viewer.
