Dieter Froese
«Imprecise Details - Not a Model for Big Brother's Spy-Cycle»
In a video installation occupying the whole of the museum, Dieter Froese illustrates the contemporary relevance of Orwell's anti-utopia in which personal freedom is annulled through an omnipresent system of surveillance and control. The ambivalence the work expresses toward the electronic medium is formally realized on a number of different levels. The piece spans reality and pretence, authentic object and model (dummy cameras and monitors), or ambiguously makes use of staged interrogations as part of a pre-recorded video marking the beginning of a cycle of information. This entry-point is shown on two monitors, which are transmitted by moving camera to the next room, where they are also filmed and transmitted, and so forth. The principle of this 'spy-cycle', i.e. surveillance cycle, is taken to the absurd lengths of a theatre of fear.
