«GENMA: Genetic Manipulator»

«GENMA» (Genetic Manipulator) is a scientific, image-making machine that allows nature to be manipulated. Its users alter the genetic code of three-dimensional, amoeba-like creatures that appear to be alive inside a mirrored, glass display case. On a touchscreen, this ‹poetic› gene manipulation machine schematically shows the genetic codes of virtual animals, which can be manipulated and, in real time, transferred through the computer, made to take on a totally new physiognomy. Through processes of selection and recombination on the genetic chain, new types of creations are created from relatively simple forms. The artists’ installation places viewers in an almost omnipotent position, endowing them with the power to determine images. «GENMA» was first developed in 1996-1997 for the Ars Electronica Center of Linz and is now installed there.
