«On Translation»
Focusing on various forms of international communication, the series included, among others, the projects «On Translation: The Pavilion» (Helsinki, 1995) which focused on simultaneous translation within international summit; «On Translation: The Games» (Atlanta, 1996) which examined the exchange of national values and symbols at the Olympic Games; «On Translation: The Internet Project» (documenta X, 1997) which developed the translation of one sentence through 23 different languages and On Translation: The Bank (New York, 1998) which dealt with the currency trade in the world of international finance.
Muntadas is especially interested in what he labels as ‹filters,› physical wrappings of exchange which operate between audience and cultural artifact: cultural institutions, architecture, and the media. Contending that these filters greatly influence the shape and reception of the artifacts, Muntadas compares this influence to that of a translator, and views the process from completion of a work to its public presentation as similar to the process of translation.
